It may be the day after (only advised if it's less than 3 miles!) or it might be weeks since the feat. Either way, it's almost guaranteed that in those first few hundred yards the memories of the marathon will come flooding back...and probably a few goosebumps too!

As you reflect on how you felt when you saw your friend at mile 18, or the tidal wave of emotions as you crossed the finish line, you realize it would be impossible not to enjoy this run! Because that is all this run is for: the fun of it all (and maybe to get the blood flowing through your legs again). There is no time to hit, pace to consider (you didn't bring your watch did you?), and there is no demanding training schedule looming ahead. This run is about why you picked up running and stuck with it -- it's the feeling you get during and after. And the bonus is that on this run you can't help but think all about your recent accomplishment. It doesn't matter whether it was your toughest race to date or how you nailed that PR, because there is no doubt that you will have something to reflect on.

Sure, after your mind has run through all of the best parts of the race you may start to think about how you'll need to put in more speedwork during your next training session or you might think "why did I go out so fast!?" What is great is that neither of those thing matter right now. That first run after the marathon accomplishes so much without all of that. You can go as short or as slow as you please. Walk that next hill; obey your calf when it tells you it's still a little tender. So let your mind wander all it wants -- look up, smile, and enjoy this run!

By Team ARM member Tommy:)

Diary of a Team ARM runner: Motivation, confidence, training + friendship= Boston Qualifying, PR-smashing experience!

*Tommy was one of the first members of Team ARM- he’s been a great leader and inspiration to the team! Thanks for sharing your story, Tommy!

“From the evening of my very first run with Team ARM, I knew I would be racing the marathon at The Oakland Running Festival. Sure, it was all part of my training in prep for the Ironman, but it was still an "A" race for 2011; and I wanted to qualify for Boston. It would take a 3:10 to do it, and a 3:05 if I wanted to register on day 5 instead of Day 7 (if you're curious about the new registration process for 2012 go to http://www.baa.org/races/boston-marathon/participant-information/register.aspx.). My marathon PR was 3:25 was on a flat course and Oakland would not be the easiest race to do it. But it was the race I chose, and I was going to make sure I was ready.

I ran with Monte and Liz from the beginning of training. In December, we ran in the dark, the cold, and the rain. We ran through the dim streets of Hillsborough, being led only by the biggest houses with the best Christmas lights. In January, we did track workouts with no lights at Burlingame - only the thunder and lightening making us run faster. We ran Crystal Springs every Saturday morning with the Team. One morning, we did an eighteen miler - Monte's longest run to date, and my fastest at that distance, we ran at a blistering 7:20 pace, the last in 6:50.

In February, I was taking minutes off my mile splits every week; Monte was always a step and a half ahead. On the day I did a 5:30 mile (the last in a set of three), I knew I was headed toward something special. We saw new faces at the store every week. Whether it was during Tuesday night track workouts, the Thursday morning runs with Julie and Katherine, or Saturday afternoons just shooting the breeze with Faisal, Jenny, or Todd, it was great to be part of a Team, a running family.”

Race day came with a quiet confidence. The day was all mine, and I just had believe in my training (and in Monte's coaching). The plan was to run the first 16 and Monte would be there to pull me in. I went out fast (as usual), running a couple of 6:10's. The Oakland hills came and forced me to a 7:30 pace - good. I hit Mile 10 - the highest point of the race and it was time to fly. Feeling oddly strong, I did the next 3 at a sub-6 pace - uh oh. "Keep it together Tommy - just get to Monte, just get to Monte".

Monte and the crew (Julie & Liz) appeared at mile 16 where they had taken over the aid station. Monte joined me and we were on our way to the finish, 10 miles ahead. Me, at a sub-3hour pace, Monte always a step and a half ahead. I felt good up to mile 20,and held on through mile 23. Then, the wheels started to come off. I was almost at blackout for the last 3.2 miles. I knew Monte was coaching but I could barely listen and keep my body moving forward at the same time. I saw two of my friends and mile 24 and I couldn't so much as muster a grin - I was in pain. Checking my watch all too often, my footfall was not much more then a shuffle. I don't remember feeling my legs or being able to look ahead more than 20 yards. The city center seemed to stand still and I was barely making any progress toward it.

The last few city blocks were the long, crowded, and seemingly endless. I barely remember seeing the finish line. But I ran through and then came to. My family was there! My running crew was there! My two best buds were there! I crossed at 3:01:51 - a Boston Qualifier and more than six minutes off of my goal. I cried as I hugged my mom and thought about all the hard work I had put in with Monte and Team ARM leading up to this moment. I was going to Boston.

Coffee/Caffeine....it's all good!

Here is an article from a recent magazine... should I be embarrassed to say I read it in the AARP Magazine??????? Studies show it enhances the effects of common painkillers such as aspirin and acetaminophen. But recent data suggest caffeine has pain-lowering powers of its own-at least when it comes to the pain associated with exercise. University of Georgia researchers showed that moderate doses of caffeine-equivalent to two cups of joe-reduced post-workout pain by almost 50 percent.

And a caffeine buzz may boost your workout. Caffeine seems to raise your pain threshold, making it easier to keep exercising or work out harder than you would have otherwise. Just don't overdo it. "If you are going to work out, get a cup of coffee on the way," Black says. "There's good evidence it makes your muscles feel better."

GREAT Splash N Dash Series!

Hey everyone- it's Liz. I found a great Splash N Dash put on by Threshold Racing at the Stevens Creek Reservoir. They have an evening series and a weekend series and it's really well-organized and fun! They had plenty of people in and out of the water organizing and a well-marked course... even pizza and beer afterward! They also put on other races, including a triathlon and kids tri. Check it out!
THRESHOLD RACING

I used this as an open water training swim for the Silicon Valley International Tri on 6/12. I had a BLAST! The swim was a lot warmer than I anticipated, but I was still very happy to have a wetsuit. Minus almost losing my timing chip in the water and not eating enough beforehand (I bonked on the hilly trail run toward the end), overall it was a really good experience. BIG thanks to Monte for coaching me through the whole thing- including pushing me to pick off some runners and makeup some time! If you're interested in doing one of these in the future- let me know! It would be a great event to get a group together for.

Hope to see people at the Hillsborough Fun Run Sunday! :) Liz

Sunday Trail Run

Our Sunday trail running series will start on May 29th! No One - Alicia Keys
I love Alicia Keys' beautiful, soothing voice. This song, from her album "As I Am," is perfect for a warm-up or cool down.

2. Crazy in Love - Beyonce and Jay-Z
This is one of those songs that I can't get out of my head for a long time after I've heard it. Fortunately, I do like the song, so I don't mind hearing it over and over again. (From Beyoncé's album "Dangerously in Love.")

3. Thnks fr th Mmrs - Fall Out Boy
You may not think you'd be into this teen favorite from Fall Out Boy, but it's catchy and full of energy.

4. SexyBack - Justin Timberlake
I'm not a huge Justin Timberlake fan, but I know a lot of people who include this song -- from his "Future Sex / Love Sounds" album -- on their running playlists.

5. Stronger - Kanye West
One of the opening lines from this song, "...that don't kill me can only make me stronger...", is a perfect mantra to hear when you're struggling during a tough run. (From Kayne's album, "Graduation.")

6. Girlfriend - Avril Lavigne
This song, from the defiant rock singer's "The Best Damn Thing" album, is full of energy and pep -- perfect for those moments during a run when you need a boost.

7. Makes Me Wonder - Maroon 5
This song's funky beat makes it a great pop music addition to a running playlist. (From the band's "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" album.)

8. How Far We've Come - Matchbox Twenty
Part of this song's chorus, "Let's see how far we've come, let's see how far we go," seems very fitting for a running playlist. (From the album, "Exile on Mainstream.")

9. Suddenly I See - KT Tunstall
This upbeat song, from KT's "Eye to the Telescope" album, always puts a smile on my face.

10. Rehab - Amy Winehouse
Amy Winehouse may be controversial, but the girl is talented -- and you can't help but move when you hear this, the most popular hit off her "Back to Black" album.

What are your top 10?

GET THOSE RUNNING CLOTHES LOOKING AND SMELLING GOOD!

We have all had the experience of pulling out our freshly washed running t-shirt or shorts out of the drawer and realizing it doesn't smell very good. Remnants of the last workout linger....hmmm, what to do? We've been asking our customers and checking out various products and here is what we've found re: odors...not all detergents are created equal when it comes to getting rid of odor completely from the fabric during the wash. Several customers have recommended Tide plus Febreeze Freshness Sport Liquid Laundry Detergent and SUN Free and Clear (not the plain SUN detergent), both should be readily available in grocery stores.

A Runner's Mind Has Gone To The Dogs

"In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi human. Parker, Jr.

One of the great joys of reading is finding a true "connection" with a story and an author. Not a casual connection to a place we want to go or an interesting time in history, but a soul-gripping connection that creases your face with a knowing smile as if someone really understands YOU - the runner - for the first time.

That's what "Once a Runner" was to me - a book that gets me and why I run. I believe anyone that has been alone on the track at night, felt the self-inflicted pain of over-exertion that doubles you over at the waist, or imagined competing at the "next level" (whatever that might be) - will feel a visceral, authentic connection to "Once a Runner."
Immerse yourself in the deep secrets that only true runners know and live - the burn-out, extra laps beyond reason, the perfect race - get the #1 most sought after out-of-print book in the US in 2007 - "Once a Runner" - it's a must read on my list-
Never stop running, Todd

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://arunnersmindbeyondthefit.blogspot.com/2010/12/great-gift-idea-once-runner-by-john-l.html' title='GREAT GIFT IDEA: "Once A Runner" by John L. Just wanted to let everyone know that we just got in the Brooks Green Silences, the silly fast and comfortable racing flat/minimalist trainer that Brooks recently came out with. Made out of 100% recyclable materials, this shoe not only looks good but also feels great on the foot. I use em' for 5k and 10k races, as well as speed workouts, and they're ridiculously awesome. They'll make you want to straight fly. Definitely the most smooth-riding speed flats I've worn. Come and check em' out at our store. If you mention this blog, I'll throw you a free pair of Experia socks ($13 value). I'm out.
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; Actually, that was just during the registration. Sun came out for the 5K run/walk. They should add "jump" to the title. There were lots of little runners who reminded us adults that running (mixed in with some walking and some jumping along the route) is FUN! The kids added bug hunting, rock jumping, running around trees and other activities....and still made great time! Check out www.lanternsrun.com for pictures and race results. Congrats to team members Monte and Todd for coming in first in their age groups and Monte coming in first overall. Congrats to team member Liz who came in first in her age group for women....but hid her electronic tag so deeply in her rain gear that it didn't register! Team member Jenny did her usual morning walk and came in 2nd in her age group....even though she stopped to chat for 5 minutes before actually crossing the finish line! Not the competitor that day! But still a medal winner! :-) Thanks to all of the organizers for their hard work! Hopefully, St. Matthews Catholic School's event was a financial success...it certainly was fun!

Run FOR Something

Tis the season for lots of Fun Runs and Walks. Our customers are some of the most interesting people on the planet!!!! From professional skydivers who need great shoes for their landings to families of Navy Seals (more to come on that!) to the first time half marathoners who began running to drop a couple of pounds before their trip to Vegas then got hooked on running to the 81 year old who still runs "but not like I used to when I was in my 70's" to the swat team member whose young daughter might have let it slip that her daddy has a gun with him! Yesterday we met someone we'd like to highlight today.

Janice Rensch is a member of the MidPeninsula Running Club in the San Francisco Bay Area. She began running when she was 45 years old. She has run in 35 marathons since then. She was the 39th woman in the world to have completed a marathon on each of the 7 continents! When asked which one was her most memorable, she said the one in antarctica in 2001. The weather (their summer) was so bad that the ship could not dock so the marathon was run around the deck of the ship...400 laps! She said her most difficult marathon was the one in China on the Great Wall. The fastest time was over 4 hours due to the very difficult terrain. She has climbed Mt. Kilamanjaro...not a marathon, but an impressive addition to her athletic accomplishments. And all this without any injuries to speak of, and wearing neutral supportive shoes....she was born to run. We were convinced we had a hairline/stress fracture in out toes and our shins felt bumpy and defeated. He said it must be from not changing his running shoes in 7 months and I couldn't remember how long I've been running in these Nikes. Then I remembered, Oh snap! My mom has a running shoe store!"

Here were her notes to us:

"Normal shoe size: 8.5-9. I'm assuming there's a rhyme and reason on whether it's better to go bigger or more snug?

Biggest issue: Shin splints from putting pressure on the front of my feet and bad knees from cheerleading/putting too much pressure on them.

Weight criteria: I run on my toes, so most of my weight falls on the front of my foot.

Posture: I stand more pigeon than duck footed.

Running style: I run: STOMP, STOMP, STOMP. I pound pavement. It's not very graceful.

Other: DON'T send me hot pink shoes!"

So when she was out here this summer, she tried on shoes and we mailed them to her so she wouldn't have to lug them home in her (free!) carry-on.

" Received my new shoes yesterday in the mail. I literally rushed upstairs, put them on and jogged around the apartment. Conclusion: IT WAS LIKE STEPPING ONTO A PUFFY WHITE CLOUD. Seriously! It proves that I've been running on strips of paper for awhile. I felt like I wasn't wearing shoes at the gym this morning and when I went to do jumping jacks, I felt light and jumpy instead of immediately getting shin splints.

I got bored with my routine but too lazy to do a full uprooting of my gym routine so I opted to incorporate jumping rope into my day. I remember being young, when recess existed and thinking, "Hmmm, I have 25 minutes to kill. I think I'll just jump rope the entire time!" Now, 15+ years later....JUMP ROPE IS HARD! Not only do I literally feel every part of my flesh that is not toned (because it bounces!), but I'm winded and wanting to hang myself with the jump rope after 2 MINUTES! Good times.

Thank you so much for sending those! This weekend, I'll test them out on the harsh Lakeshore Drive terrain."

We also added a pair of Spenco cross trainer insoles(to add some cushion) and Balega running socks to her package. Remember, it is best to try shoes on in a store....your foot changes, your gait can change, sometimes the technology and fit of a certain style of shoe changes. There are definite benefits of purchasing shoes from a shop and not just online. (speaking as a long time runner and shopper...not just a store owner!)

So, if you want to do jumping jacks and feel "light and jumpy", make sure your shoes aren't worn out! Maybe even try some Brooks Adrenaline, if you wear a stability shoe!

Mills High School Cross Country Night

What a great turnout for the Mills High School Cross Country Team Night at A Runner's Mind! Food (not all healthy, I admit! Unless pizza is in a healthy food group!) and lots of shoe fitting. Thanks to all for coming!

We hope that the newbies to this sport understand how important "the right shoe" is for a comfortable, less injury prone cross country season. The Asics 2150's, the Mizuno Inspires and the Brooks Adrenaline were the top sellers that night. These are all in the moderate stability category. Pretty lightweight. Each has a different feel. So now with the athletes fitted in the best shoe for them, we wish them luck this season! Go VIKINGS!

After the end of the event, Monte headed out with a couple of people for our first "Thursday Night It's-Almost-The-Weekend Run!". Just did an easy 3 miles, then back to the store for water and resting on the couches watching ESPN on the TV! We plan to have races playing, videos of local meets, etc., but sometimes we have been known to watch baseball and football!

What did you do on your summer vacation?

As summer comes to a close and schools are beginning, let's do what students all over the country are doing (with a little update....) by answering the question "Where Did You Run On Your Summer Vacation?" Takes a lot of time and focus to open a store! (what a surprise!)A quick update re: Haiti and the SF Avon 2 Day Breast Cancer Walk.
Monte has lived in Ghana and has participated in house-building mission trips in Mexico, yet he was unprepared for what he saw in Haiti. The devastation was vast....from the sights to the smells to the living conditions of the people. He will blog soon about this in detail. Check out www.soles4souls.org to see the video of the trip. SOLES4SOULS provided some comfort, compassion, humor and shoes to many children! Now on a more local event- April and Jenny survived the 2 day, 39 mile walk up and down and around and up and down some more Avon Walk. We are still processing this very emotional event. There are some incredible people out there!A special shout out to the guys on their Harleys all decked out in pink who helped direct traffic and cheer us on at every mile! We will also blog in more detail later....just wanted to say thanks to all donors...we contributed nearly $6,000 towards the $5.5 million total for the weekend! Our new favorite things that helped us get through the weekend:
MIZUNO Inspires, BALEGA socks, BROOKS shorts and RUNNING SKIRTS capris!!!!!!! Very comfortable and almost blister free!

Help to Haiti and the Avon Breast Cancer Walk

This is a busy weekend for the A Runner's Mind team! We are taking a break from slatwall hanging, painting, purchasing, floor installation, etc. to saving the world! Well, not really...but 3 of our teammates will be out and about participating in events sponsored by 2 amazing organizations.

Monte left for Miami last night on the red-eye where he will meet up with a group of about 20 people to distribute running shoes in Haiti's impoverished neighborhoods. Check out www.soles4souls.org for more information on this trip.

Jenny and April will be participating in San Francisco's Avon Breast Cancer Walk. Jenny's knee is feeling better after 3 weeks of inactivity and icing....who needs to train for a 2 day, 39 mile walk up and down the hills of San Francisco? They are hoping the crowd and the cause will be the motivation needed to make up for lack of conditioning!

Getting ready to go to Haiti on Tuesday night with Soles for Souls. We are planning on giving out over 750 shoes to the Haitian people over the four days that we will be there. Prior to handing out each pair, we will wash each persons feet with soap and water. Personally, I feel that the washing of the feet is a more intimate and powerful experience than the giving out of the shoes itself. Humans are humans, money or not, and we all need assistance at at one time or another in life. Giving is a great thing; but the action, thought, and preparation behind it all is what makes giving so profound. I can't wait to spend time with the people and kick it with the kids. I'm out.
-Monte

A Work in Progress

The remodel of the store is coming along nicely.
